Newmont Mining
Newmont Mining is the world's leading gold mining company and producer of copper, silver, zinc and lead, with operations in North and South America, Australia and Africa.
The brief
Newmont Mining engaged me to create a 12-month workplace communications campaign to help instil and embed a positive safety culture in its global mining operations.
A key aim of the campaign was to stimulate dialogue at all levels of the organisation and to encourage employees and contractors to take ownership of safety.
It was essential that the material was visually engaging and frequently refreshed to prevent the campaign from becoming stale.
Strategic approach
and implementation
Working with the mining health and safety teams, I identified and researched 24 high-risk topics and developed a year-long communications strategy to deliver comprehensive briefing packs focused on two of the topics every month.
Core materials included workplace posters, presentations, 3D renders and interactive content in multiple languages. Detailed VR scenes of vehicles and heavy plant machinery enabled employees to visualise safety hazards from an operator’s perspective.
The materials were specifically designed to be used by line managers and supervisors in safety briefings and toolbox talks, as research showed that these were well-respected and trusted channels.
Ad hoc incident response
I also worked with senior leadership to tackle some of the more challenging communications, developing 3D animations using architectural and AutoCAD software to accurately recreate actual safety incidents and events.
These animations have been provided to other companies to share best practice, prevent accident and injury, and ultimately save lives.
Measuring success
Newmont recorded a measurable safety improvement following the campaign and continues to win awards each year for its excellent health and safety record in a hazardous industry.
Continuing the safety journey
More recently I have worked with other companies such as Plinx to adapt and pilot remote technologies to save lives.
